M.A.S.C
MASK APPLICATION SHANGHAI CENTER
Public Facility 2021 Spring / The Bund, Shanghai
Concept
As the pandemic has passed, the habit of wearing mask during daily life is kept in the country. However, the follow-up process of used masks disposal has always been in a gray zone in the process of waste classification. Even in Shanghai, one of the first cities in China where starts waste classification first, did not dispose polluted mask properly. All the related disposal activities are located at the edge of Shanghai, away from the public.
The design of building M.A.S.C. is trying to bring the problem of used masks disposal to the public by putting the program of recycling used masks in the center of Shanghai.
The three main programs in the proposal are mechanical spaces, exhibition spaces and public work lab. The public circulation is spiraling up through the three programs. First going through the densest space with mechanical without accessing, the process of recycling wasted masks is preformed to the public. Then to the second floor where main exhibition space locates, the plastic production of recycling masks is displayed to the public. Ending at the third floor, the public could participate in the production where public work lab locates.
The sequence of circulation experience hence becomes a show of recycling masks to plastic production. Though the scale of M.A.S.C. would not handle all wasted masks, it could enhance people’s awareness on the daily-used mask disposal problem.
